It all adds up
Back during the holiday season we reviewed a couple of Sumo Lounge products for Pure Xbox’s Guide to Some of the Naughtiest and Nicest Gaming Accessories. In summary, we found both the Sultan Bean Bag and the Omni Reloaded to be quality seating options for gamers interested in something less traditional – and arguably more comfortable – than a couch or chair. With Sumo Lounge releasing a new, enlarged version of their popular Omni line of bean bag, they’ve asked us if we’d take it for a test drive and share our thoughts. So, after spending about three weeks using the Omni Plus as our primary gaming throne, we’ve got to admit that this is our favorite Sumo product yet.
At first glance, it’s clear that the Omni Plus isn’t a conventionally-shaped bean bag. When sprawled out, it actually gives the appearance of a giant pillow. The images that accompany this review should give you an idea of how the Plus is suggest to be used, but the truth is that it’s an unexpectedly adaptable product that can be used in many, many ways. We tested it out on its side, like the picture above suggests, and found it welcoming for reading, watching TV, and general lounging. But we got more creative with it and realized that there’s always some way to make it work in any situation. It’s commonly been used flat on the floor, laid out in a bed, and resting against a couch. And when the weather warms up, it might even make it into the bed of a truck for an evening at the drive-in movie theater. Its purpose is largely up to you to decide, and that’s what we like about it the most.
So how does if fare for gaming? It’s pretty awesome, actually, but it depends how you use it. We primarily used it up against a wall or couch, which, especially when combined with a pillow, provided excellent neck and back support, allowing us to sit in an upright position and stay focused on the screen. The bag also stays firm in this form, while still offering more than enough cushioning to remain welcoming to long-term sittings. We didn’t prefer it on its side while gaming, as the viewing angle never felt optimal, but even so, it was serviceable. Overall, the Omni Plus is gamer friendly, and we now choose it over the Sultan in most cases.
Another reason for this is because the Omni Plus can be moved fairly easily from room to room as opposed to the Sultan, which is a struggle to get through doorways. According to the Sumo Lounge website, the Plus measures in at 6 feet long and 5 feet wide. However, given the shape-shifting nature of the unit, it’s hard to verify that those numbers are accurate. But regardless, because the bag can be carried on its side, it navigates hallways and doorways much easier. So while our Sultan has been restricted to the living room, the Omni Plus has been ready to go wherever we please. Don’t get us wrong – it can still be awkward to move considering its size, but the point is that it’s totally doable.
When it comes to materials, the Omni Plus has been very resilient. The outer case is made of suede fabric, and while it’s not the most comfortable texture against bare skin, it certainly gets the job done. We’d like to draw attention to the fact that the stitching is flawless along the seams. Last time around, with the Sultan, we had a few ravaged threads that Sumo Lounge described as being a very rare occurrence, and it seems they were right. There are no blemishes whatsoever on our Omni Plus, not even after weeks of lugging it throughout the house. Additionally, the chunks of shredded foam fill out the bag nicely, making for a bean bag that bounces back from compression rather quickly.
All in all, we love the Omni Plus. While a more traditional bean bag – like the Sumo Sultan – might be a better bet if you’re looking for a constant fixture in your living room, the Omni Plus is going to appeal to anyone interested in a secondary seating option that can be moved around the house at will. The price tag, which is $199, is sure to scare away some consumers, but we think it’s worth it if you believe this is a product that will meet your needs. Sumo Lounge has been releasing fantastic products as of late, and the Omni Plus may just be the best yet. Comfortable, transportable, and well-made… what’s not to like?
