Sumo Urban Lounge Gear: Worth a Hill of Beans

Remember the bean bags you had in the ’80s? You could flop on it but a bunch of beads would always shoot out of the inevitable hole in the seam. Well, this isn’t that bean bag. Sumo Urban Lounge Gear sells enormous, gigantic, tremendously large bean bags that are practically indestructible. The Omni ($150) measures 4 by 5 feet and it came in a box taller than my 3 year old. He’s been home with evil viruses that make him just sick enough to miss preschool, but well enough to hurl his body off his step stool onto the Omni about 50 times. I even jumped on it and couldn’t believe how tough the thing was.

They’re made of super-thick, rip-stop nylon and the seams are all triple sewn so there’s no possibility of those little beads escaping. The opening is sealed with wide, industrial-strength Velcro over a zipper. You’d have to deliberately pry it open to get to the stuffing inside, something I’m sure my son will try at naptime one day, but I’m quite sure he’d be unsuccessful.

The uses for this behemoth are really endless. Turn it on its side and straddle it like a horse and it becomes a surprisingly comfy lounge chair. It could seat one adult for the Superbowl party or become a crash pad for a gaggle of kids. The website shows several more configurations; just try to ignore the tank-topped models draped over them. They offer dog beds and bigger sizes too, the largest of which is more than seven feet wide! They’re offering free shipping during their Christmas sale, too.
